Hewlett-Packard is ready to take on an aggressive move: they are considering the tablet and smartphone market. According to several press announcements from the company, they are ready to make an “aggressive attack” on the tablet and smartphone markets and create new products that will benefit their company. Unfortunately, analysts feel this is a risky and expensive move that may not pay off in the way HP is hoping it will.

Why HP’s Plan is Risky
HP venturing into the highly competitive mobile industry is a risky move. Why? Because no PC maker has ever successfully moved into the smartphone industry, except for Lenovo and even they only succeed in Chinese markets.

PC is making this desperate move since the current generation is now entering into the post-PC era. The industry knows that printers and PCs are being phased out and they are being challenged by smarter, more portable options as well as cloud storage. Therefore, it seems that HP almost has no other choice but to venture into the mobile market, even if they don’t have a fighting chance.

Hewlett-Packard’s Not-So-Great-History
HP has been in the mobile industry before, but unfortunately they did not have a great go at it. Just about everyone remembers the Palm Series (Palm Vx, Pam Pro and Palm Pilot). Palm had been around for quite some time and even built up a reputation as one of the leaders in the mobile and smartphone industry until HP took it over. Once HP took over Palm and integrated their own PC-like software and operations, Palm quickly fell out of popularity with business professionals and individuals alike. Since then, HP has avoided the mobile sector — until now.

There are rumors that HP will unveil its new tablet in 2013, but HP representatives have yet to verify if this claim is true. Rumors regarding smartphones vary, but the only information available is that HP is “considering” the mobile market — not that they have officially started production for any mobile products.
