Linux in 2013

At the start of a brand new year, it’s time to look ahead to the expectations, but also to the hopes of what 2013 can bring. For Linux fans, their wish list might look like this:

More Acceptance

It would be wonderful to see Linux get the attention it deserves with brands like Dell and HP selling Linux-based PCs and promoting them to their customer base as the preference.

Windows 8 has drawn positive attention to Linux because of the issues with the new Windows OS. This may lead to further acceptance of the Linux OS. Microsoft has struggled with its latest release, which means that this is prime time for Linux to prove its worth. More games and other apps for Linux could make it a real competitor with mainstream audiences.

More Hardware Options

The hope is that Linux will move beyond cheap mobile PCs to all laptops, notebooks, and desktops. The trend that has been hinting in this direction leaves us to wonder if 2013 will be the year that Linux explodes onto the scene. It also is offered on some desktops but is expected to increase as what Linux offers can compete with other operating systems.

A great area for Linux to capture is the tiny computing options, such as it has shown with the Raspberry Pi that has been popular. This could provide big implications in the computer world.

Standardization

Standardizing packaging, formatting, and everything else will make Linux more attractive to manufacturers.

What Linux needs is a real chance with decent proposals to incorporate it into use for both corporate and individual users. Up to this point, it has been getting low proposals from OEM companies.

No one can predict that 2013 will be the year for Linux, but it might gain ground on the bigger names.
