Samsung Galaxy S IV A Sony PlayStation 4 Competitor?

In what universe? Believe it or not, it might very well be a possibility in our own universe, in our time. The Samsung Galaxy SIV has been officially unveiled, and while Samsung’s stock took a tumble after that event, one cannot ignore the impressive power that the latest Galaxy phone packs in a neat – albeit not so pretty – package. As I have said before, this kind of power in a phone is totally useless for me, especially since I like using separate devices for specific tasks: the PS3 for console gaming, the laptop for work, the iPad for mobile gaming, the iPod Nano for music, and the iPhone for communication (and for eBooks).

Having said that, it does not really matter what my preferences are. When faced with that much computing power on a mobile device, people will dream up possibilities – such as mobile gaming – that might just prove to change scenes. And Samsung is definitely jumping on this.

During the launch of the Samsung Galaxy SIV, attendees could hardly ignore the section set up exclusively for gaming.

With game titles such as The Sims, Simpsons: Tapped Out, Plants vs. Zombies, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Monopoly, and Bejeweled Blitz in the works (EA says these should be out when the phone becomes available), it’s easy to imagine people being glued to their phones because of games. Even now, I see Note 2 users spending hours on end playing Real Racing 3 AND ignoring the PlayStation 3. What does that tell you?

Then there’s the Game Arcade Gamepad, which is supposed to be launched in May. Somehow reminiscent of the Xbox 360 controller, the Gamepad can be connected to the Galaxy SIV, turning the phone into more of a gaming device. And if rumors are to be believed, this accessory should fit the Note 3 as well. (I think it looks hideous, though.)

A more convincing detail is that the Galaxy SIV is compatible with that huge HDTV of yours.

So, will the Galaxy SIV compete with the PlayStation 4? It’s a very real possibility. With hardcore gamers still being a niche – and the casual gaming scene expanding – Samsung might just have a goldmine in their hands. If people don’t care about a nice-looking controller, at least.
