Canadian game developers Precursor Games have launched a crowdfunding campaign for their new title, Shadow of the Eternals, dubbed as the spiritual successor of the critically acclaimed survival horror Eternal Darkness, released in 2002.

Shadow of the Eternals will have a similar plot in that it will span more than 2,500 years of history and be set in several locations, such as Egypt, England, Hungary and the United States.

Precursor Games have not revealed too many details about the storyline, other than the fact that it will start with detective Paul Becker, called to investigate a bloody gang massacre in Louisiana. As he interrogates the only two remaining survivors of the bloodshed, the detective starts uncovering the truth about the Eternals.

According to Precursor Games, the new title will offer players a truly memorable journey through time, combining history and fiction to create a unique gaming experience that will get players to question their perception of reality. Which is pretty vague, but it sure sounds interesting and ambitious. We are certainly looking forward to finding out more details about the game in the following months.

Shadow of the Eternals will consist of 12 episodes and will first be released for PC and Wii U. The first episode will center on the infamous 17th century Countess Elizabeth Bathory of Hungary (see photo) and is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2014.

A teaser trailer was already released for the game, along with a video detailing the gameplay and an interview with Denis Dyack, the chief creative officer. The crowdfunding campaign’s main goal is to get together $1.5 million, which will be used primarily for funding the development of the first episode.  Any funds beyond the $1.5 million mark will go into development of the future episodes, additional characters, platforms and perks for gamers, the developers said.
