Microsoft has admitted that owners of the Xbox One console are having problems with the disk drive.

However in a statement the company said: “The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers. We’re working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange programme.”

Following the console’s release more than 150 people contacted the gaming news website Kotaku, saying that the new consoles were faulty, with some users reporting that the drive was making a very loud noise when they tried to insert a disc. In some cases it wasn’t reading the disk at all.

The PlayStation 4, which went on sale in the US last week, has also experienced technical problems. Users have complained of a blue light that flashes continually, affecting operation. Some units have even been turning themselves off suddenly for no reason.

In a statement Sony said that several issues has been reported. “[This] leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units,” Satoshi Nakajima, a spokesman for Sony, told Bloomberg.

“We also understand that some units were reportedly damaged during shipping.”

Spencer Izzard, an analyst from IDC remarked on the issues by saying: “For launches over multiple countries the volume of manufacturing required by both Microsoft and Sony will always unfortunately yield a minor amount of hardware failures, in one form or another, and we are seeing this with this launch cycle.”

Despite these inital issues, the Xbox One and PS4 are set to go head-to-head over the holiday season. Microsoft has said that it has already sold out at most retailers and is working to replenish stocks as soon as possible in time for the rush.
