Samsung has just announced a record breakthrough in Random Access Memory technology that could pave the way for smartphones and tablets with 4K UHD screens.  The South Korean technology giant said on Friday that it has developed the first LPDDR4 RAM. This means that the RAM will use less power than normal DDR4 RAM, but it has the ability to control double the amount of data.

According to Samsung, this means it is now feasible from a technological standpoint at least, to develop tablets and smartphones with Ultra High Definition (UHD) 4K screens.  “With the new chip, Samsung will focus on the premium mobile market including large-screened UHD smartphones, tablets and ultra-slim notebooks that offer four times the resolution of Full HD,” the company said in a statement.

4K Supported RAM

If the company can produce the RAM in high enough quantities, which I no doubt think that they will be able to, it could imply that a Samsung Galaxy S5 with 4GB of powerful RAM could be on the horizon.  Well, chip designer ARM has already confirmed that Samsung will be unveiling a 64-bit Exynos chip soon and combine this with the new LPDDR4 RAM, it could mean the Samsung Galaxy S5 becomes the most powerful Smartphone on the market by a long margin.

In addition to higher resolution displays, this RAM technology would also lead to faster and more powerful applications, a substantially longer battery life and even more advanced features that are not yet available with current handsets.

There are rumours floating around that Samsung is planning to unveil the new model of the Galaxy series, the Galaxy S5, at Mobile World Congress in February 2014.
