We all love an outsider’s chance, don’t we?  Maybe it’s the renegade team who surpass insurmountable odds to win in the final minute of the game? I think Ubuntu is a bit like that, isn’t it?  They have done really well over the last few years, in fact now they themselves say at this point in time, they are the world best choice for free operating system. The Open Source Linux OS has been around for some time now in one version or another, however they have not yet got it together when it comes to the mobile OS market. But fear not Ubuntu, more help is on the way!

Ubuntu Mobile

The Vodafone Group has just become the latest member of the Ubuntu Carrier Advisor Group, which at some point in the future, will assist in Ubuntu mobile devices being able to reach as many users as possible. According to Canonical’s statement, The Vodafone group will join “national and multi-national carriers in decisions that influence the development of Ubuntu for smartphones.”

Unfortunately, everybody is still being kept very much in the dark as to when the first Ubuntu-powered smartphone will be released.  There is a hope that such a device will make its way onto the stage at this year’s Mobile World Congress.  Maybe it could be the Meizu MX3? But they are currenty running Flyme OS.  Anyway this is complete speculation as any actual prototypes running Ubuntu Mobile OS  have not been seen anywhere in the wild as yet.  It is unclear if a manufacturer from left field or a mainstream designer is going to be involved in this long awaited project.

Whatever comes about, it is good to know that The Vodafone Group will be onboard in assisting this movement and that soon enough it will make sure users will have access to Ubuntu mobile devices.

Apart from Vodafone, the Ubuntu Carrier Advisor Group also includes the likes of China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Everything Everywhere, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telstra, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.
